The Greatest Love of All- Happy Mothers Day

She is kind, thoughtful, loving and extremely generous.  She is the reason I am alive today still pursuing all of my dreams. She is my best friend, my whole world and I don’t know what I’d do without her. She is my mom, and she has spent the last 24  years of her life making sure that I had a fighting chance for mine! She has never given up and has taught me that with  a positive attitude and lots of determination anything is possible! My moms journey began the day I was born. A day that was supposed to be filled with smiles and happiness soon turned to sadness, confusion and fear.  I was born with a fatal disease called Fanconi Anemia, and without a bone marrow transplant I would likely die before the age of ten.  With not a lot of time and numerous odds my parents decided to conceive another child to save my life! One baby, and three attempts later my youngest sister Emily was born. My parents were finally given hope for my survival,  Emily was a perfect match! The day Emily was born was a miracle and made medical history. The delivery room was filled with thirteen doctors. Who had all come to witness what would soon save my life and change the medical field forever,  the first collection of cord and placenta blood. When I was four years old we traveled to Paris, France for my transplant. Three months, many tears and battles later we went back to our home in Southern Indiana.  With the exception of some surgeries, and many doctors visits I had a very normal childhood.  When I was 17 I was diagnosed with kidney failure and needed a kidney transplant. Without hesitation Emily selflessly donated one of her kidneys. I am doing well now, living my dreams knowing that you only have one life to live, and you shouldn’t take it for granite! I am currently living in NYC with Emily and my other sister Audrey. I was blessed, to be born to such an amazing woman, she is my angel! I owe her everything and would like to thank her from the bottom of my heart. Not just for me but for the many others who have benefited from her courage
My beautiful Mama

My beautiful Mama

A mothers love is  unconditional, motivational and it is without a doubt the greatest love of all.  It can make you feel like you are the most important person in the world. …

The day I was born my mom didn’t know if I would live through the night and had no idea what my future would hold.  The day that many mothers regard as the best day of there lives quickly turned into a nightmare for mine.  Soon after, she would find out that she was about to fight the battle of a lifetime. When the doctors told her that I would die, her response was “No she won’t, because I am not going to let her!”  It was with this tremendous strength and determination that my mom proved all the doctors wrong and beat all the odds! She has NEVER stop fighting, never once stopped believing,  and has never stopped loving me!  It is her strength that gives me courage.
She paved the way and changed the medical field forever with the collection of my sisters cord blood. So this Mothers day , on be half of myself and on behalf of all the other lives that have been saved due to her exceptional courage. I’d like to give a very special thank you to the mom who started it all, my mom! I love you Mom-

Start Recycling the Minute Your Baby is Born

85429119

Green is the new color not only for the preservation of the planet but also for the preservation of life. CorCell already plays an important role in recycling life’s most priceless gift- Stem Cells. It is still common after delivery to discard the umbilical cord and placenta blood.  They become medical waste. The cord and placenta blood hold invaluable, unique stem cells that can never be produced again.  Did you know that if we continue on the same track that your baby will have a 1 in 7 chance to use the stored cells at birth to help save or improve their own life?

On Earth Day CorCell announced their commitment not only to the health of their customers, but also to the health of the planet. CorCell as a company and as individuals have taken steps to be as “green” as possible.  Rather than creating medical waste let’s recycle the gifts from birth to help save and improve lives.

Don’t throw life away, save the CORD, save a LIFE, and save the PLANET.

Healthcare Reform Bill

As I’m sure you know , President Obama just passed the new Healthcare Reform Bill. This Bill will help provide more equality in healthcare along with many other astonishing changes in the insurance and medical field.

I hope and believe It’s only a matter of time before the availability of cord blood banking will experience the same positive change!

My Top Five Favorite Blog Posts

When I started this site nearly a year ago I hoped that it would help to inspire others, bring awareness to cord blood and begin a revolution in the cord blood industry. Looking back I know that I have accomplished some of these goals and made huge steps in fulfilling all of them. The success of this site would not be as great if it wasn’t for the people who  have helped motivate and inspire me.

As I reflect on the progress that has been made, there are a few blog posts that stick out in my mind. I decided to put together my TOP FIVE posts. I based this decision on viewer response and ones that resonate deep in my heart.

TOP FIVE

I’m looking forward to another great year ahead with more exciting topics and stories to tell.  Thank you for making this a fun and educational year.

The Heroes in your Life

Dr. Cairo and I at the Tri-State Pediatric Blood Club Dinner

Dr. Cairo and I at the Tri-State Pediatric Cord Blood Club Dinner

In your life, if you are lucky you will have a hero, or maybe a few.  Someone who will always have a special place in your heart, and will be someone you can admire for a lifetime.  I consider myself one of the lucky ones.  My entire life I have been blessed with having the best heroes of all; my family and wonderful doctors.

This week I was given the opportunity to meet two of the medical fields most renowned physicians, when I was invited to attend the Tri-State Pediatric Cord Blood Club Dinner.

Dr. Cairo- The Chief of the Division of Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Pathology of Columbia University. Dr.Cairo’s dream is to further research and find cures for childhood cancers, blood disorders and immune deficiencies.  Among Dr.Cairo’s extensive credentials is his passion to save lives with the use stem cells.  His pioneering visions have helped to lead the medical field and the incredible use of stem cells to where they are today and where they will be tomorrow.  To learn more about Dr.Cairo and his astonishing accomplishments visit: http://www.dream-discover-cure.org/files/discover.php

“It is a gift of life, a very precious commodity used to cure patients.” Dr. Cairo, on the importance of cord blood preservation.

Dr. Kurtzberg- As the, Director of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Program and Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at Duke University, Dr.Kurtzberg has been on the forefront of the medical field for decades. As a leader in the cord blood and stem cell industry, she personally performed the first unrelated cord blood transplant. She, along with her group at Duke University have performed more cord blood transplants than any other group.  Her desire and dedication to expand knowledge of cord blood and stem cells sets her apart from other scientist. More recently Dr. Kurtzberg  was responsible for one of greatest medical breakthroughs to date; by using stem cells to treat cerebral palsy.

“All of the children I take care of come to us as a last hope, but they have incredible wills to live. I am inspired everyday by the families and the children themselves who I treat.”- Dr.Kurtzberg

It was such an honor to attend this prestigious event and to be surrounded by some of the worlds greatest heroes, the Doctors.  I am VERY grateful to say that without amazing medical professionals such as Dr. Cairo and Kurtzberg, I and many others wouldn’t be alive today. So to them I say, thank you!

Take time to notice the heroes in your life,  and you will realize they are all around you!

Using Cord Blood to Treat Cerebral Palsy

Toddlergirl2Today I received a reader request. A parent wrote to me requesting information about Cerebral Palsy and the breakthroughs involving cord blood. After reading the extremely touching story about her son and his struggles with CP, I felt compelled to address the issue.

According to the center for disease control and prevention, approx 10,000 babies per year in the US will develop cerebral palsy (CP). Cerebral Palsy is a very debilitating disease that affects the brains ability to control the body.  CP has many symptoms; weak muscles, inability to walk, uncontrollable movement and jerking among many others.

Victims of CP are often confined to a wheel chair, or form of walking assistance. Until recently there was NO cure for CP, only treatments to improve the condition.

HUGE BREAKTHROUGH:

In 2008 scientist at Duke University made an astonishing discovery. They began using the stem cells found inside a babies umbilical cord blood to treat CP. In an experimental procedure they infused CP patients with stem cells in hopes of repairing the brain damage.  Patients had incredible results and started showing signs of improvement just days after the procedure. To learn about how cord blood helped CP patient, three year old Chole Levine visit: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,573265,00.html

Everyday scientist are learning more and more about the life saving value of stem cells. The number of medical conditions treatable/curable with stem cells is increasing rapidly! The future of medicine is HERE: CORD BLOOD, is and will continue to save lives.

Cord blood banking is an investment worth making! You never know what could happen, but saving the cord can give you a priceless gift,  peace of mind!

Special Delivery- Cord Blood Kit Packaging!

Centurion Scientific Cord Blood Kit

Centurion Scientific Cord Blood Kit

Deciding to bank your babies cord blood is only the first step to cord blood preservation…….But what happens after that………

Do you ever wonder who is responsible for making sure the delicate cord blood arrives to the bank safely, or what is stored in after the delivery? Of course you do,  that cord blood could save someones life someday! After the delivery, your babies cord blood is put into special made packaging and handed off to the courier service who then transports it to it’s  new home.  Many people do not realize that the stem cells found inside of  cord blood are preserved best when they are kept at room temperature.  They can remain at this temperature for up to 72 hours before they process it at the lab.

Centurion Scientific Inc. started in 1993, and is a leading manufacturer of UN regulated hazardous material packaging.  They provide the home where your babies cord blood resides between post delivery and bank processing! Twenty Years Post Cord Blood Transplant!

A Celebration of LIFE!

I am thrilled to say that the month of September marks the TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY of my cord blood transplant.  This is a cause for celebration, if I ever knew one! I can’t believe that it’s been two decades already. WOW…just saying that makes me feel so old.

The most shocking fact however, has to be the lack of progress that has been made in the area of cord blood awareness since my transplant. Unfortunately, nine out of ten people I speak to about this cause say they have no idea what I’m talking about. I have noticed that I have so much passion about this that I  could spend hours just explaining it to one person.

It is absolutely mind boggling to me that if everyone in the world knew about cord blood banking, there would be so much less suffering. What so many people don’t realize is that by throwing cord blood away, you are throwing a life away.

Please help me to celebrate this wonderful anniversary, by re-posting this blog post, sharing it with everyone you know, tweeting on twitter and updating your status on face book.
