Stem Cells...AKA The Miracle Workers

Stem Cells...AKA The Miracle Workers

Yesterday was stem cell awareness day, and that got me thinking, “Is there anything that stem cells can’t fix?” Currently stem cells can treat over 70 different diseases, and I am learning about more and more everyday.  It seems to be, that if it isn’t treatable with stem cells YET, then it is on the brink of becoming possible.

What does this mean for our medical future? If you ask me, I’d say, that very soon stem cell therapies will become the norm in medical treatments. This means the more stem cells the better, right? Did you know that the richest form of a stem cell is found in your babies umbilical cord blood?  Currently cord blood is being discarded as medical waste, that is unless, parents have made arrangements to bank or donate it. Unfortunately many parents are unaware of this option and the cord blood is tossed in the trash.

Some Current Diseases Treatable with stem cells/cord blood:
  • Fanconis Anemia
  • Leukemia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hodgkins Disease
  • Lymphoma
For a complete list of diseases treated with stem cells/cord blood check out: http://www.savethecordfoundation.org

Some diseases treatable with stem cells/cord blood in the VERY near future:
  • Diabetes
  • Infertility
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
With research being conducted daily this list is rapidly increasing.

Many people ask me, “Why should we save our babies cord blood?” I say, “Why not?” Another popular argument I encounter when discussing cord blood is, “Chances are, our child will not suffer from a life threatening disease, so odds are, we won’t need to use it.” Yes, it is unlikely that your child will ever have a rare disease, but you never know. I was always taught that it’s better to be safe then sorry. The exciting news is, that in the next couple of years cord blood will be used to treat various medical conditions, and NOT just rare life threatening diseases.

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on these issues. I can be found on twitter, facebook and I welcome your emails anytime at: natalie@nataliecurry.com
